Why Airport Wi-Fi Keeps Logging You Out
Why free airport Wi-Fi logs you out right as you need it most, and how to stay connected without the hassle.
By Find to Send Editorial

Waiting at the baggage carousel, halfway through sending a message, the screen suddenly snaps back to a login page. It is the same airport Wi-Fi you connected to earlier, yet it now asks for your passport number or phone number all over again. The small window of time before your suitcase appears has just gotten more complicated.
Most international airports, Incheon included, offer free Wi-Fi throughout arrivals, transit areas, and gates. The first connection is usually painless: agree to the terms, verify with a passport number or phone number, and you are online. The trouble starts afterward. Wander through duty-free or settle into a lounge chair, and at some point the connection simply drops, forcing you through the same steps again.
This is not a malfunction. It is how the system was built to work. Airport Wi-Fi serves thousands of simultaneous users on a single shared network, so each session is capped at a set duration to keep any one person from hogging bandwidth. Once that time limit passes, the session ends automatically and re-authentication is required, partly for traffic management and partly for security. Public networks like this also carry weaker encryption and no way to know who else is sharing the connection, which is exactly why they were never meant for banking transactions or entering sensitive passwords in the first place.
None of this needs to catch you off guard. When the connection drops, simply select the airport network again from your Wi-Fi list and re-enter your passport or phone number at the login prompt; reconnection usually takes only seconds. If the verification code by text is slow to arrive, switching briefly to mobile data to receive it can help. For anything sensitive, such as logging into a banking app or making a payment, your own mobile data or a VPN is the safer choice over airport Wi-Fi.
During a long layover, it helps less to fight for an uninterrupted connection and more to simply know in advance that re-authenticating every so often is normal and quick.
The carousel is still turning and your suitcase has not appeared yet, but this time the login screen does not faze you. It is just a few seconds of re-authentication, because that is exactly how airport Wi-Fi was designed to work.
