Downtown Duty-Free Purchases Must Be Picked Up at the Airport on Departure Day
Items bought at downtown duty-free shops are not handed over in-store but only at the airport pickup counter on departure day, and the passport number and name must match the traveler exactly.

Items bought at downtown duty-free shops in Korea are not handed over on the spot. Purchases can only be collected at an airport pickup counter on the day of departure, and they cannot be received on arrival or delivered to a home address. One blog has reported that foreign travelers buying Korean-made goods can receive them directly at the store after passport and boarding pass checks, but that comes from a single source and may not apply everywhere, so it is worth confirming before buying.
For foreign visitors shopping at downtown duty-free stores, building time into the departure-day schedule for a pickup-counter visit is essential. If the passport details used at purchase do not match those presented at departure, the items may not be released at all, turning a small oversight into a real travel snag.
How the purchase-and-pickup system works
A passport (a copy is acceptable) and a boarding pass showing flight information are required when buying at a downtown duty-free store. What customers receive at checkout is not the merchandise itself but a voucher; the actual goods are released only at the airport pickup counter on departure day, after presenting the voucher, passport and boarding pass. After completing departure procedures, travelers take a number at the counter, wait their turn, and should check the quantity and item names on the spot, reporting any problem to staff immediately.
Where the counters are at Incheon Airport
At Terminal 1's east-side counter, located on the fourth floor across from Gate 11, inquiries go to 032-743-2650 and it operates from 05:30 until the last flight of the day. The west-side counter, on the fourth floor across from Gate 45, can be reached at 032-743-2700 and runs from 04:30 until the last flight. The concourse counter sits on the fourth floor by Gate 119 after getting off the shuttle train, reachable at 032-743-2750. Terminal 2's west-side counter is reached by taking the escalator down near the Korean Traditional Culture Center across from Gate 225, with inquiries at 032-743-6500; its hours are listed inconsistently, sometimes as 07:00 to 20:00 and elsewhere as 05:30 to 22:00, so travelers should confirm on the day. Because different duty-free retailers may operate separate counters, the exact location should be reconfirmed through the voucher, the retailer's app or its customer service line.
When a passport or name has changed
The passport number presented at departure must match the one registered at the time of purchase, and the buyer's name must match the person actually departing. Anyone who has had a passport reissued needs to update the new passport details, though items bought under the old passport can still be changed up until customs declaration. If a name change means the English name and passport number no longer match the order information, pickup can be refused outright.
Missing a flight or failing to collect
Travelers who miss their flight or cannot reach the pickup counter can contact customer service to change their departure information and collect the items on a later trip. If the departure date is neither changed nor cancelled, the order is automatically cancelled ten days after the original departure date and refunded to the original payment method. The departure date can be changed up to three days before departure and up to three times in total, while changing the departure airport itself requires cancelling and repurchasing; these rules can vary by retailer.
A note on connecting flights
Travelers who buy liquids and then connect through an overseas airport should check with the airline or customs in advance, since different security rules abroad can mean liquids and gels are confiscated. The usual guidance is not to open the duty-free bag until reaching the final destination.

Buying at a downtown duty-free store is only half the process; it is complete only once the items are collected at the airport pickup counter with matching passport and voucher on departure day. Anyone who has reissued a passport or changed names should update that information beforehand to avoid being turned away at the airport.
