You just checked into your hotel room — what should you check before unpacking?
Before unpacking, check the AC, heating, hot water, lights, and door lock, and report any problem right away — it is easier to fix than bringing it up later.

TL;DR — Check the room before unpacking / Test AC, heating, hot water, lights, and the door lock / Report any problem right away / Photograph existing scratches or stains
Before you unpack, take a minute to look over the room. If something is wrong, telling the front desk right away is easier to resolve than bringing it up later.
What should you check?
See if the AC or heating turns on properly and if hot water works. Check that the lights all come on and that the door lock works. These are things you can test as soon as you walk in.
What if something is wrong?
- If you find a problem, contact the front desk right away — call or go down in person — before unpacking.
- Take photos of any existing scratches or stains in the room. This helps if you need to explain something later.
- Ask if you can switch rooms. Whether that is possible depends on room availability that day.
One thing to keep in mind
A room change is not always possible — it depends on what is available that day, so do not be too thrown off if they say no. What matters most is reporting the issue right away instead of waiting.
