Hotel key card suddenly stopped working? Here's what to do
Don't keep trying at the door, head straight to the front desk for a reissue — that's the fastest fix.
By Find to Send Editorial

TL;DR — don't keep trying at the door, go to the front desk / causes vary: magnetic contact, a check-in setup error, or a mixed-up key / have your room number and name ready for reissue
If your hotel key card suddenly stops working, the fastest fix is to go to the front desk and get it reissued. Trying again and again at the door just wastes time.
Why does this happen?
If the card uses a magnetic stripe, it may have touched a phone case magnet or another magnetic object and gotten wiped. It's also possible the key setup wasn't applied correctly at check-in, or you're holding a key for a different room. The exact cause varies, so it needs to be checked in person.
So what should I do?
- Stop trying at the door and head to the front desk.
- Tell them the key card isn't working and ask for a reissue.
- Be ready to give your room number and name — they often ask for this to confirm it's you.
- Try the newly issued card at the door.
Can this be avoided?
If your hotel uses magnetic key cards, try not to keep it near phone cases with magnets or magnetic bag buckles. That habit may help.
Explaining the situation to the front desk is the surest route.
