The difficulty isn't just bad luck. Late night is when demand peaks for the day, while the number of taxis actually on the road tends to drop — shift changes cluster around this window, and the old habit of picking fares by destination hasn't fully disappeared either.

Over the past few years, the real answer to this problem has shifted from waving on the street to calling a ride through an app. When you book through an app, your destination is already logged in the system before a driver is matched, which makes getting a car far more reliable than waiting blind on the curb. The late-night surcharge applies either way — but at least the risk of being stranded with no ride at all drops significantly.

1. Install a taxi-hailing app before you need it, and register a card or in-app payment method that works with a foreign-issued card.
2. Enter your destination as precisely as possible — a vague location can slow down matching.
3. Plan around the surcharge that applies in the hours around midnight.
4. If a match still isn't coming through, it's safer to know the subway's last-train time in advance.

At this hour, it's not the person waiting on the street who gets a car — it's the person who's already told a screen where they're going.
