Incheon Airport's Smart Pass Lets Travelers Clear Departures by Face Recognition

Incheon International Airport operates Smart Pass, a facial-recognition service that lets travelers who have registered their face once pass through dedicated departure lanes without showing documents each time. According to the airport's official guidance, anyone aged seven or older can use it, with parental consent required for those under 14, and no nationality restriction is stated. A 2023 report said both Korean and foreign travelers can use the service.

The service is separate from the Ministry of Justice's Smart Entry Service, which streamlines immigration inspection. The 2023 report noted that a passport and boarding pass are still required at immigration counters. No fee is listed in the official guidance.

Three Ways to Register

Travelers can register through the SMARTPASS app, available on Google Play and the App Store, by scanning the passport, registering the face, and then registering the boarding pass, in that order. The same steps can be done at airport self-check-in kiosks by selecting the facial-information registration option, though the official page does not specify where the kiosks are located. Registration is also possible through partner finance and payment apps including KB Star Banking, Toss, Shinhan SOL Bank, Woori WON Banking, Hana OneQ, Naver Pay and NH All One Bank, with menu paths differing by app. Naver Pay integration reportedly began in June 2026.

Validity and Boarding Pass Registration

Once registered, a facial ID is valid for five years, and travelers must re-register if they renew their passport. The boarding pass, however, must be registered for every departure, except for passengers of Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, Trinity Airlines, Air Premia, Eastar Jet, Air Busan and Jin Air, whose boarding passes are registered automatically at check-in.

Where It Can Be Used

The dedicated departure lane can be used by any registered passenger regardless of airline. Self-service baggage drop, however, is limited to passengers of Jeju Air, Trinity Airlines, Jin Air and Air Seoul, and boarding gate access is available only at select gates operated by participating carriers. At Terminal 1, participating airlines include Jeju Air, Eastar Jet, Air Premia, Trinity Airlines, Cathay Pacific and EVA Air; at Terminal 2, they include Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Seoul and Air Busan. The airport says more airlines and gates will be added in the future.

Things to Keep in Mind

The official guidance warns travelers not to pack passports or boarding passes in checked baggage. The dedicated lane is reserved strictly for registered passengers, so those who have not registered should use the regular lane.

Inquiries can be directed to the Incheon Airport customer center at 1577-2600 (7 a.m. to 10 p.m., daily, Smart Service Team).

Registering for Smart Pass in advance can shorten wait times on departure day, but since participating airlines and usable zones remain limited, travelers should confirm beforehand whether their airline is included.
