Same city, different terminal — the trap between express and intercity buses
Regional travel in Korea splits not just by bus type but by terminal — the one thing to check before booking.
By Find to Send Editorial

You type your destination city into a map app to check bus times, and two terminals with the same city name pop up. One says "Express Bus Terminal," the other "Intercity Bus Terminal," a thirty-minute walk or a short taxi ride apart. If you head to the wrong one without checking which terminal your ticket actually departs from, the trip can go sideways before it even starts.
At a ticket counter inside one of Seoul's express bus terminals, a foreign traveler names their destination city. The clerk shakes their head: "That route isn't here, you need the intercity bus terminal." On the map, the two terminals looked like the same place. In reality, they serve entirely separate networks of buses.
The problem is straightforward. Regional travel in Korea runs on two distinct bus systems, express buses and intercity buses, and they frequently use different terminals in the same city. Travelers often start booking knowing only that they need "a bus," without realizing which type applies to their route.
This split exists because the two systems serve different purposes. Express buses run mostly direct routes between major cities like Seoul, Busan, and Daejeon. Intercity buses form a denser web, reaching not just big cities but smaller towns and waypoints along the way. So travel between two major cities usually departs from an express terminal, while trips involving smaller cities or transfer points usually depart from an intercity terminal. Because the two systems are run by different operators, their terminals are typically separate buildings, sometimes a considerable distance apart.
The fix is simple enough to apply before booking.
- Search your destination city together with both terms, express bus and intercity bus.
- Compare the routes and terminal names that come up, and confirm which one actually has a bookable ticket for your trip.
- Save or screenshot the exact terminal name printed on your ticket. The city name alone is not enough, you need to know whether it says express or intercity.
- If both terminals exist in the same city, check the distance between them on a map app before you travel.
The fastest check is simply looking for the word express or intercity printed on the terminal name on your ticket.
Same city, same-looking bus, but a different terminal means a completely different journey.
Back on the map app, the two terminal markers are still sitting there, unchanged. But knowing why they are separate is what keeps you from hesitating over which way to go.
