When the Carousel Keeps Turning and Your Bag Doesn't Come

A few identical carry-ons have already passed the same spot three times. The bag you're actually looking for isn't among them. The belt keeps turning, and one by one, people collect their bags and leave.

Fewer and fewer people are left standing at the carousel, and your bag still hasn't shown up. Two thoughts tend to arrive at once — it's probably still somewhere in transit, and maybe it's genuinely lost.

In most cases where checked baggage doesn't appear, it isn't lost — it's delayed. A tight connection, a bag loaded onto the wrong flight, or simply not having reached the final airport yet. True disappearance is actually rare — every bag carries a tag, and airline and ground-handling systems keep tracking it by that tag the whole way.

The problem is that none of this is visible to the traveler standing at the belt. There's no way to see where the bag currently is or when it'll arrive. So the first move isn't to keep waiting — it's to file an official report that starts the tracking process on record.

1. Report it to the airline (or the airport's baggage service desk) before you leave the baggage claim area — once you've cleared customs and left the airport, filing becomes far more of a hassle.
2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and hold on to the reference number.
3. Leave an exact delivery address — usually your hotel. Once the bag turns up, most airlines will deliver it there.
4. If you have to buy essentials — toiletries, a change of clothes — while waiting, keep the receipts. Many airlines reimburse a portion of delayed-baggage expenses.

A missing bag and a bag that just hasn't arrived yet are different problems. Most of the time, it's not about location — it's about time.

The belt keeps circling the same stretch, but now a reference number is doing the chasing instead. More often than you'd expect, the bag is already waiting for its next flight, closer than it seems.
