Korea Uses 220V Round-Pin Outlets — Will Your Charger Just Plug In?

TL;DR — Korea runs on 220V with round two-pin outlets / same plug shape means you can plug in directly / different shape needs an adapter, 110V-only devices need a converter / ask the hotel front desk if you need to borrow one

Korea's household electricity is 220V and outlets take round two-pin plugs. If your device uses the same plug shape, you can plug it straight in. If not, you'll need an adapter or converter.

Can I just plug my device in as is?

Start by checking the plug shape. If your device comes from a country using the same round two-pin plug as Korea, it fits right in. If your plug has a different shape, like flat pins, you need a shape-converting adapter.

Even if the shape matches, can voltage still cause problems?

Plug shape and voltage are two separate issues. If the device label shows a range like 100-240V, an adapter alone is enough and safe. But if the label only says 110V, plugging it in without a voltage converter (transformer) can damage the device.

So what should I check?

  1. Phone and laptop chargers usually support a wide voltage range, but check the label to be sure.
  2. Heat-based devices like hair dryers or straighteners often have a fixed voltage, so always check the label.
  3. If the label only shows 110V, do not plug it in without a converter.
  4. If needed, ask the hotel front desk whether they lend adapters or if a hair dryer is already in the room.

A quick look at the voltage label is the surest way to avoid frying your device.
